Lost Servo 04:46
LOST SERVO (2017/2019) I’d been on the road for hours when, down the barrel of those lines, I began to see these flickers that sent a chill all down my spine. I’d heard tales from old truckers how this place could just appear, out of nowhere on a highway and draw you in its sphere. Oh, the air was full of neon with colours all aglow. And if I wasn’t dreaming, I’d found the lost servo. The waitress took my order, And, while she wrote it on a pad, it appeared right on the table, and was the best I’d ever had. God knows how long it was I lingered in the spell. But how long is a piece of string? How deep is that well? Oh, the hours curl like vapour when you’ve nowhere else to go. And if I wasn’t dreaming, I’d found the lost servo. And, in a trance, I watched as loved ones that I’d lost so long ago criss-crossed the floor before me, a-swinging to and fro’ ...Oh-oh-oh oooo... And I held again the kindly hand, my father’s sturdy one. And the gentle face of my mother that never shone upon my sons. oh, hold me in the knowing, all these parts that need to grow. I knew I wasn’t dreaming. I’d found - the lost servo.   And, turning on the open road, my knuckles turning white, and my senses in hyper drive, no longer sure of what was right. And I couldn’t shake the question, ‘What was this place I’d seen, that filled me with desire, pumpin’ dreams not gasoline?’ Oh, drifting in the shadows of what I do and do not know, I knew I wasn’t dreaming. I’d found - the lost servo. And in a trance, I watched as loved ones that I’d lost so long ago criss-crossed the floor before me, a-swinging to and fro’; a-swinging to and fro’. I’d found the lost servo. All rights reserved. Lyrics - Bones Mackinnon Music - Charles Jenkins ©

YOU BROUGHT THE SUN (2017/2019) Well, lonely is my second name And broken is the road Half-baked notions in a caravan’s - a dream in any brogue. Now, lovin's mostly easy It's the livin’ that gets hard An’ running seems the answer When the voices leave you scarred. I wasn’t looking for a miracle not even for a home just a’tumblin’ and a’tumblin’ which ever way she roll'd You brought the sun that morning into my foggy room held it in a tea cup And served it with a spoon. Yeah They say I lost my bearin’s When the desert took hold where the soul has its longin’ 'nd the nights are long and cold. You stumbled on that broken road You found a song behind my eyes You played it on some old guitar You made it ring across the skies You brought the sun that morning into my foggy room held it in a tea cup And ya served it with a spoon Yeah, you stumbled on that broken road found a song behind my eyes And played it on some old guitar You made it ring across the skies You brought the sun that morning into my foggy room held it in a tea cup And served it with a spoon You brought the sun that morning… All rights reserved. BALLOON MAN (2021) Balloon man All your coloured balloons Play our tunes an’ lift our eyes Coloured balloons Aching memories Distant loves in the palm of his hand Balloon man Whispers with tenderness Seethes, gnarls and coils Coloured balloons Tell us a story Help us forget all the grey Balloon man holds our dreams Balloon man lifts our eyes Take me sailing through the skies Take me sailing from these lies Balloon man set me free! Balloon man Down by the river Keeps his rainbows there Coloured balloons ask no questions Floating mysteries on the end of a string Balloon man All your coloured balloons Play our tunes An lift our eyes Balloon man Holds his lines tethered in one hand by the one at the end Balloon man holds our dreams Balloon man lifts our eyes Take me sailing through the skies Take me sailing from these lies Balloon man set me free! GOIN' BACK (2001/2019) Goin’ back, spirit risin’, River callin’, spirit risin’ Song is singin’, and spirit risin’. Goin’ back home. Young brown eyes in the sun face a light that’s burnin’. Red dust flies behind the wheels across the camp you’re leavin’, Ohhh, you’re leavin’. Goin’ back, spirit risin’, River callin’, spirit risin’ Song is singin’, and spirit risin’. Goin’ back home. Kept the truth deep in your heart. A pain that kept on hurtin’. Held your head above the whispers saved yours from being taken, Yeah, from being taken. Goin’ back, spirit risin’, River callin’, spirit risin’ Song is singin’, and spirit risin’. Goin’ back home. One day, I'm gonna go back there. You know, back to my family; An’ back to the river; back to my country. Yes. I'm goin’ back home. It’s now time to dream again, along your ageless winding river. The desert winds will sing your story: A silent song that’s deafenin’ Oh, it's deafenin’. I’m goin’ back, spirit risin’, River callin’, spirit risin’. Song is singin’, an’ spirit risin’. Goin’ back, goin’ back. I’m goin’ back, spirit risin’, River callin’, spirit risin’ The song is singin’, and spirit risin’. I'm goin’ back - home. All rights reserved. iT NEVER CROSSED MY MIND (2019) I saw you out there you offered me some company a kindly gesture on your part I was too busy chasing rainbows to see the ones deep in your eyes it would have been easy enough to spend some moments in a dream but you know, it never crossed my mind It never crossed my mind I saw you out there you always seemed so easy I didn’t see you falter at the gate you always seemed so self-assured while I was always in a mess it would have been easy enough to stand a little closer to you but you know, it never crossed my mind It never crossed my mind seconds fall like cinders drifting from our view what was once warm in our hands disappears beyond the blue I saw you out there I thought that you were floating I thought I’d kinda like that, too it didn’t occur to me you were in trouble how hard it was to keep afloat it would have been easy enough to wade out there and offer a hand but you know, it never crossed my mind It never crossed my mind seconds fall like cinders drifting from our view what was once warm in our hands disappears beyond the blue it didn’t occur to me you were in trouble how hard it was to keep afloat it would have been easy enough to wade out there and offer a hand It never crossed my mind It never crossed my mind All rights reserved. I CLOSE MY EYES (2021) I hear a whisper, swirling in the wind Sweeten the air with a breath of spring and I close my eyes I’m lying in clover watchin’ the stars fall Or gatherin’ freesias by the old dance hall and I close my eyes blossoms are calling, magnolia too, and lovers by the river singing, ‘I love you’ and I close my eyes, and I’m walkin’ again Along the dusty track, it’s takin’ me back And I close my eyes, and I’m goin’ home Days turn to ev'ning, moon to the sun I dream of tomorrows that have not begun and I close my eyes Why fill our lives with nothin’ but hurry getting ourselves nowhere but sorry and I close my eyes Tall trees're dancin, an’ colours sing glory. All this wonder - it whispers our story and I close my eyes, and I’m walkin’ again Along the dusty track, it’s takin’ me back And I close my eyes, and I’m goin’ home We're going home. Utopia 03:38
UTOPIA (2017/2019) Out there, along the highway, past the rider in the tree, take the road out to Utopia where your heart must be. Well, you can hear it cryin’, and callin’ in the night, for the home it’s been missin’ where a spirit is free where a spirit is free Out there, in Utopia, there’s no-one livin’ loud; no need for luxury when feet are feelin’ proud. people got no hurry, no payment plans; Starry skies in the evenin’ pour riches in their hands pour riches in their hands All the cities there're all chokin’; there’s madmen at the wheel, only carin’ for the silver, not the brokenness you feel. well, these cities they will crumble in time - you will see what my father gave me lives in my heart. It’s part of me what my father gave me lives in my heart. It’s part ... of me All rights reserved. Morning Song 02:19
MORNING SONG (2021) Before the cold dawn, and the clarity of day, within the deep shadows, know you’re not alone. Tiny birds sing the welcome, gentle lullaby of morn. Precious gifts to lift a spirit and we know we’re not alone And with every new beginning, there’s whispers of the past. The arms that held us close, the shoulders that we rode, appear upon the ridge, right before the light. The old ones of our knowing remind us we belong, And we are not alone. We are never alone. We are never alone. All rights reserved. Lyrics - Bones Mackinnon Music - Charles Jenkins ©

about

‘I just listened to ‘Goin’ Back (Dora’s Song)’. Holy shit, Bones, it’s really REALLY good! The song is great, and so is the production; and your voice is amazing!!! Can’t wait to listen to the rest!!
(Liz Stringer, Australian Singer/ Songwriter/ Instrumentalist)

'This thing rocks!! It's beautifully produced. It's got a ragged beauty to it like a lo-fi Crazy Horse or classic Lucinda. I love the sound, and the way the songs have been given heaps of room to stand on their own merits, and not be over polished; and stand up they do!!
(John Broughton, ‘Retrospectives Program, Casey Radio)

‘Goin’ Back’ is the debut album from independent Gippsland artist Bones Mackinnon offering a diverse collection of songs celebrating the complexity, and the simplicity of life. Not easily slotted into a single genre, the album shimmies between country, rock, folk and pop, travelling along a dusty road from tender ballads to rowdier numbers that get feet tapping.

Bones (Pauline) Mackinnon, Australian writer, teacher, and singer, began working with acclaimed songwriter, Charles Jenkins in 2019. What started out as Charles mentoring Bones in songwriting, soon developed into a productive collaboration spanning over 3 years. With husband Greg Mackinnon, Bones fine-tuned some of the arrangements, and took them to producer Douglas Lee Robertson.

The album is the result of this unique journey, offering an eclectic collection of songs about home and country, heartbreak and longing, wonder and wisdom.

Bones explains, ‘When people say they are goin' back, it usually means they are going back home, to where they belong; to their home country. This album is about belonging and connection. It's about goin’ home and owning where you’re from, and also owning where you are — all that’s easy to own, together with all that’s less so.'
